  HORSE & PONY LESSONS

Lessons cater for all levels of experience

CHILDREN

PONY RIDES

For the under 5s we recommend pony rides. These rides are a great introduction for the young rider to gain confidence around the pony without exposing them to the dangers which can be encountered once they are riding unaided.

Pony rides consist of a 20 min session with an experienced handler to lead the pony and assist your child. The child will also be able to brush the pony.

Cost $35 for 1/2hour session

BEGINNER LESSONS

For ages 5 and up our beginner course provides a solid introduction.

Over 10 lessons the beginner will learn to walk, trot, steer and stop the horse and manoevour confidently through obstacles.

On the ground they will learn how to catch, lead and groom the horse, tack it up, as well as basic horse sense and safety.

Cost of course is $550 and will consist of 10 45min sessions, either weekly, bi-weekly or fortnightly.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES

Students build on skills learnt in the beginner classes and progress at a rate suited to the individual.  Cantering, jumping small obstacles and more complex skills are introduced.

Cost is $60 for 45 min session, 15 mins preparation, 30mins riding. Prepaid cards are available and 10% discount applies.

ADVANCED CLASSES

For the student wishing to progress to a higher level. Dressage and Showjumping skills are taught with introduction of competition techniques. School horses are sometimes available for hire for local competitions.

Clients with their own horses are coached to achieve their best, whilst maintaining a sportsmanlike attitude to the sport.

Cost of advanced lessons:

On school horses:   $60/half hour

                                     $75/45mins

                                     $90/1hr

On private horses:  $45/half hour

                                     $50/45mins

                                     $60/1hr

ADULT LESSONS

Adult lessons are available during school hours and some evenings. Complete beginners, those who are 'getting back into it', and the more experienced are all very welcome. We can only cater for up to 6' height and 85kg, due to the size of our horses.

The advanced prices are relevant for adult riders of all levels

MOTHER'S MORNINGS

These will run from 2009. They will consist of a 2 hour session running from approx 10-12am. 3 or 4 in a group. We will do some horsemanship skills, an hour + riding lesson - including games and skills, followed by morning tea. If the group is of appropriate skill levels we may commence trail rides in these sessions. These are a fun, social occasion.

Cost $95 payable a week in advance.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LESSONS

Here at Shelby, we aim to provide the 'whole experience' to our riders.  This means we expect them to be able to groom, saddle, bridle and handle their horse or pony on the ground, as well as from the 'safety' of the saddle.  To allow for this:

Please arrive 15mins before your scheduled time Your session is actually 45mins. 15mins horsemanship and 30mins riding. If you are 5 mins late for your session, the horse/pony will be saddled for you.  Please make your way straight to the arena in this instance.

PLEASE call if you are going to be late! If you are late your lesson time will be reduced to allow the next lesson to commence on time.

NO DOGS Are Allowed at Shelby.

PLEASE keep children beside you at all times as they can cause accidents!

Wet weather

Lessons will be run in all weather except thunderstorms/extreme rain, or gale force winds. Please phone Rachelle on 0414 505 093 at 2.30pm if you are unsure. If you just choose not to arrive, you will have to pay in full for your lesson prior to the next one.

Clothing

Heeled boots (available at school if required, not all sizes available), long pants and sleeved shirts (no singlets) MUST be worn for lessons.  Helmets must also be worn – available from school. Sunscreen is highly recommended. Back protectors are also recommended especially once students are jumping (available from saddlery).

Cancellation

Cancellations must be received by 6pm the day before the lesson, or full payment is required at the next lesson.   Or the lesson may be made up within 7 days of the cancelled lesson. Failure to respect this request will result in termination of lessons. No exceptions to this, other than extreme circumstances!
